Groom for Improvement -
How to select the right groomer for your pet.
by Dawn Beechler
Grooming has become a ritual practice among pet owners. Pet lovers use grooming services as a means of keeping their animals looking their best.
What is often skimmed over are the “humane” practices and health benefits associated with grooming.
We humans tend to be very selective when choosing a new hairdresser. For our pets, this decision is even more important as there are additional concerns
that could affect their physical and mental health. Frequent visits to the groomer is often your first line of defense against potentially life threatening risks – your veterinary visit is usually only once per year. Groomers tend to form a strong bond with the animals in their care and it is this bond, along with the intimate handling of your pet, that could lead to the discovery of infections, lumps or other potential problems. Using a groomer with whom your dog is comfortable, will not only lead to a great looking animal, but to a happy and healthy one.
Unfortunately, working with animals is not synonymous with being an animal lover. Groomers should be “pet people” and have your pet’s best interest in mind. However, there are many out there that consider grooming as just a job and who can be harmful to your pet. It is very important for pet owners to do their due diligence and choose the best person. The following is a checklist for helping you choose the right groomer to work with your beloved pet:
• Does the grooming facility look clean and fresh? How does it smell? Ask to see the cages, bathing and grooming areas. Some fur is acceptable but odors of urine or feces are absolutely not!
• Is there adequate lighting to minimize the risk to your animal from tools such as scissors and clippers?
• How are the cages? As your pet may spend hours in the cage, they should be clean and large enough for your animal to be comfortable?
• Are the dogs receiving fresh water? Are they walked regularly?
• Is the grooming area open to public viewing? If not, be wary.
• Is the facility prepared to handle special needs dogs? If your dog has allergies, do they use hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners?
• Spend some time watching the groomers. Do they leave animals unattended? This is totally unacceptable, even for a few seconds. While being groomed, dogs are kept still with a “grooming loop” around their necks. If left alone, the potential for a possible senseless death is high.
• Now spend some time talking with the groomer. Are they knowledgeable and caring? Do they seem approachable to your pet? It may take a few sessions for some dogs to warm up to their groomer but if they are warm and caring, this should facilitate the acclimation.
• When you drop off your pet, does the groomer take the time to discuss your particular case with you? Did they examine your dog’s coat and discuss different options with you?
• Different groomers have vastly different philosophies. If your pet’s coat is severely matted, will they remedy the situation in the least stressful and harmful manner? Sometimes the most humane avenue is to shave your pet. Although this may be undesirable to you, the fur will grow back.
• Are fees in line with the competition? Unless your pet requires special attention, grooming fees should not fluctuate excessively between groomers. Special procedures will be more expensive, as will a mobile groomer. Keep this in mind when comparing.
Selecting the best groomer for your pet is an important decision. Not only will your pet enjoy their salon visits, they will look great and be healthier, happier members of your family.
